2nd Grade Math – What My Child Learns in Grade 2 Math

TutorGiant

Grade 2 math challenges your child in linear measurement, problem solving, and other areas of study.  In grade 2 math class, students will learn new number problem solving strategies, 3-dimensional shapes, practice using standard units of measurement, create and describe patterns, increase fraction skills and organize data in different ways among many other new math skills.

Grade 2 math is a pivotal year in the primary grades.  In this grade, your child will use his/her basic understanding of mathematical fundamentals and ‘use’ them to solve problems and expand knowledge.  Grade 2 math is an important year in math class because it is a stepping stone for taking already known principles and applying them to solve problems.

This article will help you better understand what is expected of your child in 2nd grade math class.  Whether you are reading this in September, March, or June, you will have a better understanding of where your child is at with regards to his/her stage of math skills.  These guidelines are universal, that is, they apply to most 2nd  grade  math students regardless of location.

Grade 2 Math – Number Sense and Numeration

Grade 2 math is a big step with regards to your child’s understanding of number skills.  Students in grade 2 will learn to compare and order numbers in the base-ten number system.  Your child will learn to combine, compare, and determine the relationships of fractions.  Counting skills will become more advanced as your child learns to count by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, and 25’s up to 200-300.  Your child will also learn how to calculate addition and subtraction problems using two-digit numbers.  Students in grade 2 will also learn to estimate, using mental math, sums and products.

Grade 2 Math – Measurement

In grade 2, your child will learn and practice estimating and measuring lengths, heights, and distances in standard units.  Your child will also learn how to estimate and measure mass and capacity.  Time and temperature measurement skills will also become more advanced in grade 2 as your child will learn to measure the change in temperature and write time to the half and quarter hour.  Grade 2 students will also learn the relationship between smaller and larger units of measurement.

Grade 2 Math - Geometry

Grade 2 students will learn to classify and identify polygons (i.e. shapes such as pentagons and hexagons) and 3-dimensional figures.  Your child will learn to explain the movement of shapes and describe the location of objects on a map.

Grade 2 Math - Patterning and Algebra

Your grade 2 child will learn how skip counting (e.g. 5, 10, 15) can introduce the concepts of multiples and factors.  Students will also investigate number patterns involving addition and subtraction.  They will learn to represent and create shrinking and growing patterns.  Grade 2 students will also learn to show that two number expressions can be equal (e.g. 5+5=10 and 6+4=10) as well, they will learn basic algebra by learning how to determine missing numbers in equations.

Grade 2 Math – Data Analysis and Probability

Students will learn to gather, collect, organize and read data.  In grade 2 math class, students will be able to read pictographs, tally charts, and bar graphs to analyze data.  They will also learn to describe the likelihood of probability of events.

Grade 2 Math - Summary

By the end of grade 2, your child will gain a better understanding of the base-ten number system and estimating strategies.  The focus in measurement will be on standard units of measurement and the relationship between units.  Three dimensional shapes, basic algebra skills, and more detailed data interpretation skills will also be explored in grade 2 math.

So what can I do with this information?

If this is the beginning of the school year:

Now you are aware of the curriculum expectations/content standards for your child.  As your child begins grade 2 math class, you can help him/her learn the concepts at home, with or without school books (see other math tips in this category).  You can also prepare your child before the lessons are taught.

If this is the middle of the school year:

You can reinforce content that was already learned in class (i.e. by reviewing math workbooks, textbooks, finding a tutoring service, etc…).

If this is the end of the school year:

Now you have a good idea as to what was expected from your child in grade 2 math.  You can take a look at your child’s report card and school workbook to determine ‘problem’ areas.
