Writing Skills – Transition/Linking Words

TutorGiant

In a personal narrative or recount, the reader has to know when things happen and in what order.  Understanding the order of events helps the reader organize the information.

Transition words help the reader know the time order of events in a piece of writing.  Some examples of transition words are: during, after, next, then, and before.

It is important for writers to use transition words not only to show the time order, but to separate the events.  The transition words help the reader break up the events so that they are not meshed together.

Your child can use the following writing cues in order to practice time order and transition words for longer pieces of writing (e.g. personal narratives and recounts).

·         Your child can write a sentence that could be from one of his/her personal narratives.  Your child can replace a word with a transition word at the beginning of the sentence.

·         Your child can write a sentence about a recent experience and use a transition word to start it off.

·         Your child can write two sentences using a transition word to connect the two ideas.  The second idea should begin with a transition word.

·         Your child can practice using transition words by writing a retell of his/her day (not all the details from the day are needed, only a handful of main events).  The retell should include several transition words that connect the events in time order.

Transition words are a useful tool in order to help your child organize his/her ideas when writing.
