Writing Skills – How do I Write a Procedure?

     There is actually a procedure to writing procedures!

     Writing a procedure is a great way for students to practice organization and detail writing skills.  In order to write a procedure, students will learn how to write text that follows a pattern by listing steps that show how to do something.

     Procedures are usually associated with writing science experiments.  They also include recipes and ‘how to’ manuals.  Students can write a procedure in science, social studies, and math.

     You can help your child organize a procedure by following these steps (I guess you can say that this is also a procedure).  Each of the following should be in its own paragraph.

1.    Your child should list the ‘goal or aim’ of the procedure.  This is an outline of what is to be done.

2.    Then, your child should include any materials, instruments, or ingredients needed for the procedure.

3.    The method is the most important part of the procedure.  The method is a list of steps, either in list form or in paragraphs.

4.    The last part of a procedure is the evaluation.  The evaluation states whether or not the goal was achieved.

     Your child should use linking words that illustrate a chronological order.  The procedure should also be written in present tense and towards a general audience.
