Writing Skills – Descriptive Essay Writing TutorGiant In order to write a descriptive essay, students must be able to first write descriptive words, descriptive sentences, and descriptive paragraphs. A descriptive essay can be a narrative, a personal recount, a report, or an explanation. The more description and detail that is added to a piece of writing, the more the reader will enjoy and understand the content. Descriptive Words and Sentences The key to writing descriptive words is to use a combination of adjectives, adverbs, and sensory words. Students should consider using colorful adjectives and adverbs when describing objects and actions. For example, the sentence, ‘the enormous and furious wave crashed down on the rocks with a thundering blast,’ includes several adjectives and adverbs that describe the wave. This effect can also be used by younger students. For example, “the big wave crashed on the sharp rocks,” is still more descriptive than just saying that “the wave hit the rocks”. Students should also incorporate ‘sensory’ words when writing. Sensory words are words that show the effects of the five senses. Students should combine sensory words to create sentences. For example, instead of just saying, “I sat on the beach and heard the birds as they flew in the air,” we can say, “I felt the soft sand under my feet as I gazed at the seagulls gliding over the ocean”. Descriptive Paragraphs A descriptive paragraph should have a topic sentence and supporting sentences that contain descriptive words. The paragraph should be organized in time-order sequence. It should also include adjectives, adverbs, and sensory words. The last sentence in the paragraph should conclude or summarize the entire paragraph and link back to the topic sentence. Descriptive Essay A descriptive essay should have an opening sentence telling what the essay is about. The body of the descriptive essay should contain the descriptive paragraphs, which in turn, contain the descriptive sentences and words. The last paragraph of the descriptive essay should summarize the body and make a conclusion about the topic paragraph. Clearly, descriptive words lead to descriptive sentences, which lead to descriptive paragraphs that make up the descriptive essay. As students use more descriptive words in their writing and follow the format of writing an essay, they will see a definite improvement in their writing. ©Tutorgiant.com
