My Child Doesn’t Like to Write

It isn't easy to motivate students to write if they are not interested. Quite often, unmotivated students see writing as a chore as opposed to a form of self expression. They key to motivating your child to write is to focus on the content as opposed to the form. If you can get your child interested in writing for the sake of writing, he/she will ultimately develop the appropriate skills later on.
You can help motivate your child to write by trying some of the following: 1. Reward your child for completing any writing activities whether it is at school or at home. Rewards such as praise, movie, or extra video or TV time are good ideas. You know your child best. 2. Have your child create personal narratives or stories about topics of interest. For example, if your child likes a certain movie, sport, video game, or TV show, have him/her write a story about his or her topic of interest. Your child can include him or herself in the story. Let your child make it silly, funny, or any way (within reason) he or she wishes. Your child is more likely to try to be successful when writing about something of interest. 3. Encourage your child to read his or her stories to family members. There's nothing like positive reinforcement, encouragement, and praise from loved ones. Your child will develop a sense of pride and accomplishment. 4. My favorite suggestion is to have your child type out his/her story on the computer (or a family member can do the typing if it is difficult for the child). Your child can learn how to use spell check, and, for added story writing fun, your child can paste pictures into a program such as Microsoft PowerPoint to make a slide show to accompany his or her story. This is a great way to get your child interested in writing. He/she will have a slide show (which is like a movie) that will give him/her a visual representation of the story. This is great when your child writes about anything from superheroes to science fiction stories. Wait until your child has developed an interest in writing until you decide to work on his/her writing skills. Once your child begins writing on a regular basis, you will have overcome the motivation issue and could then begin working on writing skills.
