Fractions/Percents - How do I Change a Fraction to a Percent?
TutorGiant
Changing a fraction to a percent is one of the easier fractions skills to learn – as long as you know your division!
If a fraction is over 100, just eliminate the denominator and add the percent sign. For example, the fraction 85/100 becomes 85%.
If the fraction is over a power of 10, try to change the denominator to 100 by multiplying by 10/10 or 100/100. For example, the fraction 7/10 becomes 70/100 or 70%. The fraction 3/10 becomes 30/100 or 30%.
If the number is a decimal, for example 0.45, it is actually written as 45/100 (0.45 is written as 45 hundredths…see ‘decimal place value’) or 45%.
When we want to change a fraction to a percent and the fraction is not over 10 or 100, we have to convert the fraction to a decimal.
We have to:
1. Divide the numerator by the denominator.
2. Move the decimal place two spaces to the right and adding a percent sign.
For example, to change the fraction ⅜ to a decimal, we divide 3 by 8. The answer is 0.375. Now, we must move the decimal 2 spaces to the right. Our answer becomes 37.5, or 37.5%.
Remember, if the fraction can be made into a power of 10 or 100, we can easily find the decimal number. If the fraction is not over 10 or 100, we must divide the numerator by the denominator.
