Writing Skills – How to Write Descriptive Personal Narratives
TutorGiant
When writing a personal narrative, it is important for students to remember to pay attention to descriptive words and personal feelings.
Students can improve their personal narratives by incorporating the following ideas:
Use the 5 Senses
The 5 senses (hearing, tasting, touching, smelling, seeing) bring a piece of writing to life. Students should remember to use descriptive adjectives and verbs that enhance the five senses. For example, instead of writing, "the girl smelled the flower', students can write, "the sweet scent of freshness from the flower glided into her nose".
Dialogue often gives a narrative a sense of 'life'. When applicable, students should try to incorporate some dialogue in order to give the writing a 'human feel'. Keep in mind, some narratives might be better off without dialogue. Students should consider whether or not a conversation (i.e. dialogue) fits in with the content.
Use Thoughts and Emotions
It is extremely important for writers to add their personal thoughts and emotions in their writing. This gives writing that 'personal' feel to it. When writing a narrative, students should try to write about a topic that they are somewhat emotional about (when I refer to 'emotional' I am referring to both positive and negative emotions). When a writer feels strongly about something, whether it is positive or negative, those emotions will come out in their writing.
By paying attention to descriptive words and personal feelings, students will improve their descriptive essay writing skills.
