Geometry - Types of Pyramids in Math

TutorGiant

      A pyramid has 3 or more triangular faces that share a common vertex.  The base of a pyramid can be any polygon.  Pyramids are named according to their base. So, a pyramid with a square base is called a ‘square-based pyramid’.

      A pyramid is a polyhedron that has only one base (there is no top).  The other faces are congruent triangles which share a common vertex (the top point).  A pyramid is regular if the base is a regular polygon and the other faces are congruent isosceles triangles.

     The volume of a pyramid is a measure of how much it would take to fill the shape. The formula for finding the volume of a pyramid is:

Volume = 1/3 base x height

     This formula is true for pyramids of any shape base. As long as you can find the area of the base and you know the height, you can calculate the volume.
