Writing Skills – Quotation Marks TutorGiant In order for students to properly write narratives, they must know the rules of using quotation marks. Quotation marks are used to enclose the exact words of the person speaking. Quotation marks also show that words are used in special ways, as well; they are used to punctuate titles. Direct Quotations Quotation marks are placed before and after the spoken words. For example, “David is a very nice guy,” Emma said. Notice how the quotation marks are exactly around the words that Emma said. Also, notice how the comma after the word ‘guy’ is inside the quotation marks. Special Words Quotation marks are used to separate a word that is being discussed. For example, The word “said” is used to often in writing. The word ‘said’ is not actually being spoken, it is being set apart from the rest of the sentence (I actually did it in this sentence). For example, “O Canada” (Song – National Anthem) “Escape” (Book Chapter) Commas, Periods, and Quotation Marks Exclamation and question marks are placed inside the quotation marks when it punctuates the quotation. They are placed outside when it punctuates the main sentence (huh?) For example, “Do you want to go with me to the toy store?” asked mom. In this sentence, the question mark is inside the quotation marks because the question mark is punctuating the words inside the quotation. “Yes for sure!” I replied Again, the exclamation is punctuating the words inside the quotation. Did the daughter say, “I want to go to”? In this sentence, the question mark is not just referring to the words ‘I want to go to”. The question mark refers to ‘Did the daughter say, “I want to go to”?’, therefore; the question mark punctuates the main sentence.
