Writing Ideas (Part 4) – I Need Writing Ideas!

TutorGiant

Writing ideas are sometimes hard to come by.  It is easy for most students to start to find information, but it is difficult for them to decide on an idea unless they are given a specific one from their teacher.

Students should choose a topic based on the type of essay writing assignment.  For example, a topic for a report is quite different than that of an explanation.

The following 5 types of writing each have their own unique topics.

The 5 types of writing purposes are:

·         Explanatory

·         Persuasive

·         Descriptive

·         Narrative

·         Procedural

Explanatory

·         Causes - volcanoes, erosion, hatred, tornadoes, pollution, war

·         Different Kinds of... - movies, stores, cities, clothes, music, tv shows, villains

·         Definitions - family, fear, friends, culture

Persuasive

·         Persuading - homework is bad, stealing is wrong, seat belts, too much tv, video games are fun, gum should be allowed in school, pets should have rights

Descriptive

·         Places - your home, city, country, zoo, forest, store, kitchen, lake, farm

·         People - friend, teacher, hero, family member, famous athlete, singer, actor

·         Things - pet, bicycle, video game, car, food, book, hobby

Narrative

·         Fiction - fantasy story, historical fiction, romance, science fiction, realistic fiction,

·         Essay - being happy, being a good friend, learning, volunteering

Procedural

·         How to... - bake a cake, exercise, save money, how to vote, fix something, teach something, take care of a pet

Of course, there are many, many more ideas out there for each category.  What's important for students though, is to choose (if they are able to) a topic which they are interested in, then, they can decide on the type of writing.  Or, if a student is required to do a type of writing (e.g. an explanation), then they can decide upon a topic of interest.
