Math Tests – What is the Best Way to Study for a Math Test?

By Stuart Ackerman

Most students probably know that they should study for math in a different way than they should other subjects.

Math requires different study techniques and skills.  In order to be prepared for math, you must do practice questions and memorize formulae.  You should also be familiar with math-specific vocabulary.

While studying for math, you can do the following:

·         Consider the chapter and lesson title.  It is important to be conscious of what you are learning so that you have a better understanding of the big picture and fine details.

·         Read and understand each term, formula, and symbol before going on to the next chapter or lesson.

·         Write down important formulae and properties in your notes.

·         Pay close attention to diagrams, graphs, and charts.  This will help you gain a better understanding of the concepts because you are able to visualize them.

Once you have started to write a math test, consider the following:

·         Read over the entire test to get an idea of the number of problems and the type of problems.

·         Do the test in the order that works best for you. That is, do the questions you are sure about first, or the ones that are worth the most points.  This will improve your chances on getting your brain in gear and obtaining more points.

·         On a separate sheet of paper, write down all the formulae that you will need for the test.  This may eliminate confusion later on when you are writing the test.

·         Pay attention to the time.  Pace yourself so that you spend the appropriate time on longer questions that are worth more.

·         Break word problems down into very small bits of information.  That is, every time you are given a number (e.g. 24 seconds) or a keyword (e.g. decreases by...) write it down.  This will increase your chances on understanding the problem.
