PROBLEMS – How Can I Solve Math Word Problems?

By Stuart Ackerman

Math problems are always one of the biggest issues when it comes to math.  Students from grades one to high school often seem to have difficulties with math word problems.

There are some techniques and strategies that can be taken in order to make math word problems less 'problematic'.

·         Determine if the issue is language based more than math.  That is, does the problem lie more with a reading difficulty than an understanding of math concepts?

·         First, make sure that the mathematical operation is identified.  That is, is the question asking for multiplication, division, subtraction, or to follow a more advanced formula?

·         Look for keywords in the math problem (e.g. difference, sum, how many in total, all together, spent...).

·         Become familiar with words and phrases that usually indicate specific functions (e.g. product, double, triples for multiplication, into, average, quotient for division etc...)

·         Write a number sentence after reading the question (e.g. 4 x 2 =?).

·         Write down the formula (if one is required, for example a = pier2).

·         The problem can be rewritten in order for clearer understanding.

·         Draw a picture and/or diagram.  This visual strategy is very helpful.

·         Break down each part of the word problem into single steps.

By following these steps, students will be able to solve math word problems with more ease.
