Geometry – Help with Grade 1 Geometry and Measurement By Stuart Ackerman In grade 1 geometry/measurement class, your child will learn to measure area with non-standard units (e.g. their hand, a book, and paperclip), use directional language (e.g. up, to the right…), discover symmetry, and learn about two dimensional shapes. Your child will learn: · the fraction concept of a half (from studying symmetry) · to move shapes (transformations) · describe the location of a shape relative to another object · to compare areas in several ways · that some shapes take up more space (area) than others · to estimate and calculate the number of shapes that can cover a surface · use non-standard units to solve area problems Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 1 geometry/ measurement such as: · area · half · symmetry (symmetrical) · unit · left, right, under, beside Ways you can help your child at home: 1. Have your child try different types of puzzles that contain different shapes.
