Numbers – Grade 1 Math Help With Numbers By Stuart Ackerman In grade 1 number sense and numeration, your child will be introduced to the concept of place value and will also review greater numbers. Your child will continue to learn about addition, counting, reading and writing numerals, and comparing numbers. Your child will learn: · that a number can be represented in different ways · to count items in groups of 5 and ten · counting patterns · compare, order, and represent numbers · count by 1’s, 2’s, and 10’s · use math language to identify and describe numbers · about patterns in a 100’s chart Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 1 number sense and numeration such as: · estimate · grouping · pattern · the correct spelling of numbers (e.g. ten, twenty, thirty-five) How you can help your child at home: 1. When walking in the house or in a store, your child can estimate how many steps it will take to get from one place to another. Have your child count as he or she walks. Emphasize every time your child counts a multiple of 5 or ten.
