Addition and Subtraction – Grade 1 Math - Help With Addition and Subtraction

By Stuart Ackerman

In grade 1 addition and subtraction, your child will continue to practice addition and subtraction problems.  In grade 1, your child will use his or her known strategies and learn how to find patterns in addition and subtraction.

     Your child will learn:

·         that addition tells them the total number of objects

·         that subtraction shows what is missing

·         addition and subtraction facts up to 20

·         to recognize addition and subtraction sentences

·         what happens when they add and subtract with zero

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 1 addition and subtraction such as:

·         add

·         subtract

·         total

·         take away

·         sum

·         difference

How you can help your child at home:

1.    You can take some dice, a deck of cards, a set of a toys (e.g. animals, action figures), or food (e.g. jelly beans) in order for your child to visually and physically see that addition results in ‘more’ and subtraction results in ‘less’.

These basic skills are the essential building blocks for future success in mathematics.
