Multiplication and Division – Grade 2 Math Help With Multiplication and Division

By Stuart Ackerman

In grade 2 multiplication and division, your child will use his or her skills of numbers, number patterns, addition and subtraction.  Your child will use multiplication and division in real life contexts and learn how to problem solve by making models and using charts.

     Your child will learn:

·         that a number can be represented in different ways

·         that division and multiplication are related to addition and subtraction

·         to use concrete materials in order to multiply and divide

·         to solve simple multiplication and division problems

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 2 multiplication and division such as:

·         division

·         multiplication

·         divide

·         multiply

How you can help your child at home:

1.    Practice counting by 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s, and 10’s.  This will help your child learn about multiples (e.g. 2, 4, 6, 8, and 3, 6, 9, 12…).

Grade 2 math students can easily learn how to multiply by using physical objects and by mentally grouping and dividing objects.
