Linear Measurement – Grade 2 Math, Help My Child Measure

By Stuart Ackerman

In grade 2 math, your child will learn how to use standard and non-standard units for linear measurement.  Your child will learn various ways to measure objects using a variety of measurements.

     Your child will learn:

·         to measure length, width, height, distance, and perimeter

·         units of measurement

·         estimate, measure, and record linear measurements

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 2 linear measurement such as:

·         distance

·         length

·         width

·         height

·         perimeter

·         metric and/or U.S. Customary units of measurement

How you can help your child at home:

1.    Have your child estimate the length, width, or height of any object around the house.  Use a measuring tape to see how close your child’s estimate was.  Try to use different units of measurement (i.e. smaller ones and larger ones).

The more practice your child has with grade 2 measurement concepts at home, the better his or her skills will become.
