Improve Writing (Part 2) – How Do I Improve My Child’s Writing?

By Stuart Ackerman

It is sometimes hard for parents to help their child with writing assignment because quite often, parents themselves, don’t exactly know the correct format of a particular piece of writing nor do they know the teacher’s expectations.

Parents have a different job when it comes to helping their child become a better writer.

There are several ways that you can help your child improve his or her writing at home.

Share your own pieces of writing with your child.

Be a good role model by showing your child the practical applications writing has in his or her life.  You could show your child how you write a business report, a letter, or a postcard.

Show interest.

One of the most important things you can do to help your child improve his or her writing is to show interest.  Your child will develop a sense of pride when you read, discuss, and make a big deal about his or her stories, reports, poems, and articles.

Locate professional examples.

Let’s assume that your child is writing a book report.  It would be a great idea for you to go online or look in a newspaper for a book report written by a professional reviewer.  You can also look in one of your child’s science books to see how a report is written.  The point here is to use published examples of writing as benchmarks for your child.

Get involved.

Maintain contact with your child’s teacher (or keep track of your child’s monthly calendar) in order to keep abreast of writing assignments.  By doing so, you can help your child get a head start on assignments.  You can collect writing examples and help your child find information before your child begins his or her assignment.

Try to follow these recommendations and you will be providing a solid support system for your child at home.  His or her writing assignments will seem less tedious, as well; your child will feel your support, thus improving his or her essay writing skills.
