3-D Geometry and Measurement – Grade 4 Geometry and Measurement

By Stuart Ackerman

In grade 4 math, your child will be introduced to 3-D shapes and measuring mass, volume and capacity.

     Your child will learn:

·      the similarities and differences between 2-D shapes and 3-D shapes

  •  to sketch faces of 3-D shapes
  •  build and sketch 3-D shapes
  •  to solve problems involving 3-D shapes
  •  to choose units to measure mass, capacity and volume
  •  to compare objects by mass using different units
  •  relate units of mass

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 4 geometry and measurement such as:

·         congruent

·         mass, volume, capacity

·         similarity

·         faces

·         vertices

Ways you can help your child at home:

  1. If possible, take your child near a construction site (don’t trespass), and notice how a building’s frame shows edges and faces.

The more practice your child has with grade 4 geometry at home, the better his or her fraction skills will become.
