Addition and Subtraction – Grade 4 Math Addition and Subtraction

By Stuart Ackerman

In grade 4 math, your child will be introduced to mental math, estimating sums, adding and subtracting, and estimating differences.

     Your child will learn:

  • to mentally add and subtract using 2-digit numbers
  • to estimate sums and differences
  • adding on and taking away numbers to perform mental math calculations

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 4 addition and subtraction such as:

·         estimate

·         sum

·         difference

·         calculate

How you can help your child at home:

  1. When shopping or going out for dinner with your child, have your child estimate the bills before they arrive at the table.  Ask your child to estimate the bills if he or she hypothetically took off an item as well.

The more practice your child has with grade 4 addition and subtraction at home, the better his or her fraction skills will become.
