Area – Grade 4 Math, Area of Shapes

By Stuart Ackerman

In grade 4 math, your child will be introduced to measuring area.

     Your child will learn:

·         to compare area

·         to measure area using square units

·         to relate area, shape, and perimeter

·         to relate linear dimensions to area

·

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 4 area such as:

·         area

·         linear

·         square unit

·         perimeter

·         dimensions

Ways you can help your child at home:

  1. Show your child practical applications for finding area around your home.  For example, you can show your child how to find the area of the floor that needs to be tiled or carpeted.  You can show your child how to find the area needed to lay sod or wallpaper a wall.

The more practice your child has with grade 4 area at home, the better his or her area and perimeter skills will become.
