Patterning and Algebra – Grade 4 Math, Help with Algebra and Patterning

By Stuart Ackerman

In grade 4 math, your child will learn about number patterns, patterning rules, and will be introduced to algebraic thinking.

     Your child will learn:

·         to recognize repeating patterns

·         to use t-charts to explore and record patterns

·         introductory algebraic thinking by finding missing terms

·         to identify, extend, and create patterns

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 4 patterning such as:

·         attributes

·         extending, shrinking, repeating

·         equation

·         t-chart

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Use a deck of cards to create repeating patterns (e.g. a 3 card, an Ace, a 10, a 3 card, an Ace, a ten etc…), shrinking patterns (e.g. 8 of spades, 7 of spades, 6 of spades, etc…), and growing patterns (e.g. 4 of hearts, 5 of hearts, 6 of hearts etc…).

The more practice your child has with grade 4 patterning at home, the better his or her patterning skills will become.
