Fractions – Grade 3 Math Help with Fractions

By Stuart Ackerman

In grade 3 math, your child will be introduced to visual representations of fractions and mixed numbers.

     Your child will learn:

·      to compare fractions using pictures

  •  to explore fractions as part of a whole and a set
  •  about mixed numbers

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 3 fractions such as:

·     mixed number

  •  fraction
  •  equivalent
  •  compare

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Have your child collect all of his or her favorite items (e.g. video game boxes, dolls, baseball cards).  Ask your child to describe fractions about the items.  For example, you can ask your child, “What fraction of games are sports?”, or, “What fraction of dolls have brown hair?”

The more practice your child has with grade 3 fractions at home, the better his or her fraction skills will become.
