Multiplication and Division – Grade 3 Math Help with Multiplication and Division

By Stuart Ackerman

In grade 3 math, your child will be introduced to several multiplication and division techniques and skills.

     Your child will learn:

·      to see the connection between addition and multiplication

  •  to use multiplication tables to learn multiplication facts
  •  to group objects in order to divide
  •  estimate quotients and products
  •    to multiply by doubling

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade  3 multiplication and division such as:

·      regrouping

  •  quotient, product
  •  estimating
  •  grouping, doubling

How you can help your child at home:

  1. When out food shopping, have your child find items that are grouped.  Your child can estimate and calculate the total cost of the group.  For example, if you find a package of applesauce that costs $3, you can ask your child how much 4 packages would be.  Your child can first estimate the total cost and then actually calculate it.

The more practice your child has with grade 3 multiplication and division at home, the better his or her multiplication and division skills will become.
