Patterning – Grade 3 Math Patterning

By Stuart Ackerman

In grade 3 math, your child will be introduced to number patterns and patterns in charts.

     Your child will learn:

·      to extend shape patterns

  •  to explore addition patterns
  •  to recognize characteristics of patterns
  •  to complete patterns in charts

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 3 patterning such as:

·       patterning

·         attributes

·         t-charts

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Help your child recognize patterns in the home.  Point out the varying color, size and shape of the patterns.  Have your child determine if the pattern is repeating and how it is repeating.

The more practice your child has with grade 3 patterns at home, the better his or her patterning skills will become.
