Area and Grids – Grade 5 Math Help with Area and Grids

     In grade 5 math, your child will be introduced to the area and perimeter of shapes and coordinate grids.

     Your child will learn:

·      to find the area of irregular 2D shapes

•  to find the area of polygons and rectangles
•  to find the connection between perimeter and area
•  to solve area and perimeter problems
•  to find locations on coordinate grids

     Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 5 area and grids such as:

·      perimeter

·       area

•  polygon
•  coordinate
•  irregular

How you can help your child at home:

1. Practice multiplication skills with your child.  This unit requires that students find area (the formula is a=l x w or area=length times width).

     The more practice your child has with grade 5 area and grids the better his or her area and grid skills will become.
