Data Management – Grade 5 Math Help with Graphs and Graphing

     In grade 5 math, your child will be introduced to interpreting graphs, creating graphs, and interpreting data.

     Your child will learn:

·         to construct broken-line graphs, circle graphs, bar graphs, and pictographs

·         to interpret graphs

·         to calculate mean, median, and mode of a set of data                                                

     Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 5 data management such as:

·       broken-line graph

·         pictograph

·         bar graph, circle graph

·         interval

·         mean, median, mode

How you can help your child at home:

1. With your child, look in newspapers and magazines for different types of graphs.  Have your child explain the differences between the graphs.  Also, have your child determine if the data is appropriate for the graph.

     The more practice your child has with grade 5 data management at home, the better his or her data management skills will become.
