Measuring Length and Time – Grade 5 Math Help Measuring Length and Time

By Stuart Ackerman

In grade 5 math, your child will be introduced to measuring perimeter, measuring distances, and measuring time.

     Your child will learn:

·         to measure the perimeter of shapes

·         to measure lengths of objects and measure lengths of distances

·         to record dates and measure times

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 5 measurement of length and time such as:

·       perimeter

·         measurement, measuring

·         distance

·         millennia, millennium, decade, century

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Show your child how to use tools around the house that measure liner measurement such as a tape measure and ruler.  Show your child the different units and have him or her measure different objects around the house with each unit.  You can make a game out of this by having your child go on a scavenger hunt for objects that can be measured.

The more practice your child has with grade 5 measurement at home, the better his or her time and length measurement skills will become.
