How to Learn Fractions
TutorGiant.com
Fractions, more than any basic math concept, seem to challenge most students. In the early grades, students learn to identify fractions by using visual aids. By the time students get to grade 5 or 6, they are learning how to compare, add, and subtract fractions. An even greater challenge faces students in grades 7 and 8 when they are required to multiply mixed fractions, change improper fractions into mixed numbers, and divide fractions.
To gain a good foundation for understanding fractions, children must have a thorough understanding of the basic concepts of a half, whole, quarter, third, etc…
One of the best ways to help your child learn about fractions is through real life learning that makes the concept relevant.
The following are real life tips for you to help your child understand the basic concepts of fractions.
1. If you are doing any kind of renovations, repairs, or handy work around the house, you
can use common tools that involve fractions. You can show your child how you use a ruler to
measure the width of a picture frame by counting the fractions of an inch. Or, you can point
out the difference between the sizes of nails.
2. Kit Kat bars (although they contain sugar) can be great reinforcers
for understanding fractions. It is easy to break off pieces to show
quarters, halves, and eighths.
3. Baking and cooking also cater (excuse the pun) to learning fractions.
Have your child help you measure ½ a cup, a quart etc...
4. The mall is also a great place to learn about fractions. For example,
a store might be having a sale that says “1/2 off all merchandise”.
You can help your child figure out how much the item costs by using fractions.
These are effective strategies to help teach your child about fractions because they are real life examples of how mathematics can be useful. Try not to make it a math lesson, rather, make it a life lesson.
