Number Sense – Grade 5 Math Help with Rounding Numbers and Decimals

By Stuart Ackerman  MSc.Ed.,B.A.

In grade 5 math, your child will be introduced to reading and writing numbers, exploring decimals, and estimating.

     Your child will learn:

·         to write numbers in different ways

·         to see relationships between decimals and whole numbers in daily life

·         to solve problems involving place value, decimals, and whole numbers

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 5 number sense such as:

·       estimating

·         rounding

·         decimal

·         hundredths

·         thousandths

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Have your child look batting averages in the newspaper.  Batting averages are usually shown as decimal numbers.  Have your child compare batting averages by telling you why one average is better than another (e.g. .482 is greater than .491).

The more practice your child has with grade 5 number sense at home, the better his or her number sense skills will become.
