Patterning – Grade 5 Math Patterning

By Stuart Ackerman  MSc.Ed.,B.A.

In grade 5 math, your child will be introduced to 2D patterns, patterns in tables, and solving problems using patterns.

     Your child will learn:

·       to identify, create, and extend patterns

  •  to create tables to organize information
  •  to recognize pattern rules
  •  to explore 3D patterns
  •  to solve problems involving patterns

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 5 patterning

such as:

·       patterning

·         2 dimensional, 3 dimensional

·         pattern rules

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Have your child create his or her own number patterns.  He or she can use a deck of cards and create some number patterns (e.g. counting by 2’s).  Your child can also write down number patterns using addition, subtraction, or other math operations.

The more practice your child has with grade 5 patterns at home, the better his or her patterning skills will become.
