How to Calculate Area – Grade 6 Help Calculating Area

By Stuart Ackerman  MSc.Ed.,B.A.

In grade 6 math, your child will be introduced to geometric and unit relationships, area rules for shapes, and solving problems with equations.

     Your child will learn:

·         area rules for parallelograms, triangles and polygons

·         to solve problems by using equations

·         to solve problems regarding the area of regular and irregular polygons

·         to determine the relationship between different units

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 6 area skills such as:

·      parallelogram

  •  polygons
  •  geometric
  •  irregular

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Have your child calculate the area of a small room in the house.  Then, have your child estimate the area of a larger room in the house.  Have your child then calculate the area of the larger room and determine if his or her estimate was close.

The more practice your child has with grade 6 area concepts at home, the better his or her measurement of area skills will become.
