Dividing Decimals – Grade 6 Help with Dividing Decimals

By Stuart Ackerman  MSc.Ed.,B.A.

In grade 6 math, your child will be introduced to dividing decimals and estimate quotients.

     Your child will learn:

·         to estimate quotients

·         to divide decimals by 100, 1000, and 10 000

·         to divide money amounts

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 6 decimal division skills such as:

·         tenths, hundredths, thousandths

  •   quotient

·         whole number

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Have your child divide decimals in real life situations.  For example, if a hiking trail is 3.46 kilometers long and you want your child to divide it into 4 equal parts, how long would each part be?  Have your child first estimate then calculate.

The more practice your child has with grade 6 dividing of decimals at home, the better his or her decimal division skills will become.
