Fractions, Ratios, Percents – Grade 6 Help with Fractions, Ratios and Percents

By Stuart Ackerman  MSc.Ed.,B.A.

In grade 6 math, your child will be introduced to the relationship between fractions, decimals, ratios, and percents.

     Your child will learn:

·         to compare and order fractions

·         about fraction and decimal equivalents

·         about ratios and equivalent ratios

·         how to relate percents, decimals, and fractions

·         to unit rates

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 6 fraction, ratio and percent skills such as:

·       unlike denominators

  •  equivalent
  •  unit rates
  •  special ratios

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Have your child describe real life examples of decimals, fractions, percents and ratios.  For example, your child can look at all the fruit in your fruit bowl.  Let’s imagine that there are 5 apples out of 10 pieces of fruit in the bowl. Your child can express the number of apples in the bowl as 5/10, ˝ , or 0.5.

The more practice your child has with grade 6 fractions, ratios and percents at home, the better his or her math skills will become.
