3D Geometry and Measurement – Grade 6 Help with Geometry and Measurement

By Stuart Ackerman  MSc.Ed.,B.A.

In grade 6 math, your child will be introduced to finding surface area and volume of shapes and working with 3D shapes.

     Your child will learn:

·         to build 3D shapes from nets

·         find the surface area of polyhedrons

·         to find the volume of triangular prisms and rectangular prisms

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 6 area skills such as:

·      polyhedron

  •  prisms
  •  surface area
  •  volume

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Take some food boxes (e.g. cereal box, frozen food box), gently take them apart (making sure nothing gets ripped), and have your child put them back together into their 3D shape.

The more practice your child has with grade 6 3D geometry and measurement at home, the better his or her measurement and geometry skills will become.
