Multiplying Decimals – Grade 6 Help with Multiplying Decimals

By Stuart Ackerman  MSc.Ed.,B.A.

In grade 6 math, your child will be introduced to multiplying by decimals and estimating products.

     Your child will learn:

·         to multiply by tenths

·         to multiply by hundredths

·         to multiply to thousandths

·         about decimal equivalents

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 6 decimal multiplication skills such as:

·         tenths, hundredths, thousandths

  •   equivalent
  •   whole number

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Have your child measure the length or perimeter of an object in the house to the nearest tenth or hundredth (e.g. 5.32 cm, or 6.71 inches).  Then, have your child determine the perimeter or length of 5, 10, or any other number of the objects.

The more practice your child has with grade 6 multiplication of decimals at home, the better his or her decimal multiplication skills will become.
