Probability – Grade 6 Probability

By Stuart Ackerman  MSc.Ed.,B.A.

In grade 6 math, your child will be introduced to solving probability problems and interpreting probability experiments.

     Your child will learn:

·         to conduct probability experiments

·         describe probabilities in different ways (e.g. percents and fractions)

·         to calculate theoretical probability using tree diagrams

·         about random events

·         about experimental probability

Your child should be familiar with the appropriate vocabulary related to grade 6 probability skills such as:

·         theoretical and experimental probability

·         tree diagram

·         random

How you can help your child at home:

  1. Take some dice.  Ask your child how many times he or she will roll a 5 in 10 rolls.  Then, have your child roll the dice and count the number of times that he or she gets a 5.  Your child can make a tree diagram before rolling to list all the possibilities.

The more practice your child has with grade 6 probability skills at home, the better his or her probability skills will become.
