Behavior Management – Ways to Change My Child's Behavior By Stuart Ackerman A behavior token economy requires that your child, instead of expecting privileges for doing nothing, now have to earn priveleges by getting tokens through good behavior. A token economy is simply a contract between your child and yourself that states that if your child behaves inappropriately, you will agree to trade in tokens for a particular reward or privilege. A token economy can help your child be more responsible and change his or her behaviors for the better. The process is quite simple. 1. Choose a negative behavior that you want to change and a positive behavior that you would like to see start or continue. For example, a negative behavior you want to change may be interrupting or avoiding homework. Behaviors that you want to see might be waiting to speak and doing homework without being asked. 2. With your child, assign a token value for each behavior. This will give your child ownership of the contract and will make him or her more likely to stick with it. 3. Be consistent! This concept relies on both parties (you and your child) following the rules. Try this type of behavior plan with your child. Make sure that you don’t try to change too many behaviors at once. First work on the ones that you think your child will find easiest to change. This will give your child more confidence that he or she can change other behaviors later on. ©Tutorgiant.com
