Inappropriate Comments - My ADHD Child Makes Inappropriate Comments By Stuart Ackerman MSc.Ed.,B.A.
ADHD kids who make inappropriate comments at home often do the same at school. Reason being, they simply can’t control themselves. This first thing to consider here is to work with your child’s teacher and make sure that you are both using the same strategies, rewards, and consequences with your child. It is important that you show your child to perform behaviors that promote some form of self control such as making eye contact and making sure that your child monitors his or her comments. One useful strategy is for you to tell your child, at least when in class, is to keep his or her comments on topic and relevant to the subject. By doing so, your child will have some restrictions as to what to say and what not to say. This will give your child appropriate boundaries regarding comments. It is very important for you to ‘show’ your child the difference between appropriate comments and inappropriate ones. Furthermore, some comments may be appropriate but their timing is wrong (e.g. trying to discuss a problem from recess time during a math lesson). You can ‘show’ your child the difference between appropriate and inappropriate comments by role playing and especially catching your child when he or she makes inappropriate comments at the wrong time. You may also wish to show your child how to read social cues so that your child can become aware of inappropriate comments. That is, have your child pay attention to the facial expressions of others (i.e. anger, hurt) or the silence that follows an inappropriate comment. Furthermore, you should identify your child’s specific ‘type’ of inappropriate comments (e.g. insults, timing,), point them out to your child, and work on them. You may even wish to develop a reward/consequence system with your child that focuses on his or her specific types of inappropriate comments.
