Low Self Esteem - My ADD/ADHD Child Has Low Self Esteem By Stuart Ackerman MSc.Ed.,B.A.
Quite often, ADD/ADHD students experience low self esteem issues. Their friends know that they are ADD, the other kids in the class know, and most importantly, your ADD/ADHD child knows. Your child realizes that he or she is ‘different’, but from a child’s perspective, being different is not always beneficial considering that most kids spend a vast majority of their time trying to fit in. The most important things your can do for your child in order to boost his or her self esteem is to surround your child with ‘positives’. 1. Recognize and Praise Strengths – Make sure to acknowledge all the things your child is good at whether it is sports, academics, or even playing a video game. Point out to your child that he or she does in fact have talents. 2. Reduce Competition – Consider eliminating competition whether it is in the household or with an extra-curricular event. Your child will feel worse when he compares himself to others. 3. Socialize with Positive People – Make sure that your child is surrounded by positive family and friends who support his or her sense of self. By following these recommendations, your child will begin to realize that he or she has some good abilities and a likeable personality.
