Help My Child Son Choose Books

How can you get your son to read when video games, music, and sports are all competing for his attention?
It’s a tough battle but there are some weapons parents have in their arsenal. What’s really important is for parents to understand their son’s abilities and interests.
If video games are monopolizing your son’s time, then use them to your advantage. Yes, you can use video games to improve your son’s reading skills. In fact, you can use any of your son’s interests to propel his reading abilities forward.
Here are some suggestions for parents who have reluctant male readers at home.
Know your son’s reading level. If a child is given a book that is too easy, he won’t be challenged. If the book is too difficult, he will become frustrated and discouraged. You can ask your son’s teacher about his reading level if you are not sure.
Take your son to the bookstore and look for books together. Your enthusiasm and interest will rub off on your son. Make the trip an exciting experience.
Look for authors with multiple books (i.e. a series). If your son likes the first book, he will look forward to reading the rest in the series.
Buy your son any type of literature for kids. Graphic novels (advanced comics) have made a huge comeback lately. These ‘books’ have deep storylines and characterization. Reading is reading. If your son can develop an interest in these types of books it just may be the ‘reading spark’ you’re looking for.
Focus on Quality Literature. If you can get your son hooked on reading classic novels that contain adventure (e.g. Around the World in 80 Days) , science fiction (e.g. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), and fantasy (e.g. The Book of Dragons), your son will want to read more.
