Playing - Help My Child Deal with Winning and Losing

By Stuart Ackerman  MSc.Ed.,B.A.

I’ve seen it in the classroom, in gym class, and in the school yard.  Some kids are poor winners and sore losers.  Unfortunately, they don’t take other children’s feelings into consideration after playing.

If you have seen your child win or lose in an inappropriate fashion, you should make your child aware of how others feel.  The best way to do so is to catch your child in the act.  That is, catch the moment your child loses or wins and determine if he or she is a poor winner or sore loser.

If you catch your child winning a game, and hopefully the other child being a poor loser, point out to your child how the other child is behaving.  Have your child express to you that he doesn’t want to be nor play with the other child because of the other child’s attitude (i.e. being a sore loser).  Let your child know that that’s the way your child looks when he or she is a sore loser (i.e. no one wants to be around your child nor play with your child).  Conversely, if your child loses a game and another child is a poor winner, ask your child the similar questions.  Get your child to   verbalize that the other child is making your child feel bad.

Let your child know that this is how she or he sometimes behaves.  Have your child explain and show you how he or she will act in the future so that other kids would still want to play with and be with your child.
