Homework Help - How Can I Help My Child With Homework?

By Stuart Ackerman  MSc.Ed.,B.A.

Although there are mixed research findings about whether homework really increases students' academic achievement, many teachers and parents agree that homework develops students' initiative, self-discipline, responsibility, and fulfills the expectations of students, parents, and the school system.

If possible, try not to do your child’s homework yourself! It denies your child the opportunity to practice skills and gain an understanding from the practice. Doing homework should help your child plan, manage, and complete work on his or her own.

You should be familiar with your child’s school homework policy and help your child get the most out of homework by:

1.    Encouraging your child to take notes about homework assignments when they are given.

2.    Discussing homework assignments with your child in order for your child to become familiar with what he or she is studying.

3.    Carefully planning after-school activities to allow time for homework and family activities.

4.    Planning homework schedules and routines that allow some free time or social time when assignments have been completed. Know your child’s best time for homework.

5.    Teach your child how to break large assignments down into manageable pieces.

6.    Check completed assignments, and review homework that has been marked and returned. This will give you a good sense as to what your child should work on at home.

7.    Provide your child with a good computer.  If a computer is not available in the home, make regular visits to a public library or community learning center where computer access is available.

8.    Try to complete reports and assignments using word processing programs and other software. This will help your child improve his or her computer skills.  It will also improve your child’s confidence in completing well-developed finished products.  Students with writing difficulties will also benefit a great deal by using a computer.
