Homework - What is Homework?

By Stuart Ackerman

WHAT IS HOMEWORK?

Homework is the outside-of-the-class tasks that a student is assigned as an addition to and expansion of classroom work. Three types of homework: practice, preparation, and extension

Practice Assignments

Practice assignments reinforce skills and concepts learned in class. Students who have learned a new math concept such as multiplying fractions, for instance, may be asked to solve some questions at home.  This type of homework allows students to reinforce the skills they learned in class.

Preparation Assignments

Preparation assignments provide background information, these assignments can include readings in the class text, online research, and other activities requiring the gathering or organizing of information before a class discussion or presentation. Good preparation includes guidelines on why and how the assignment should be completed.

Extension Assignments

These assignments promote independent and creative learning by focusing on student initiative and research. Extension assignments are usually long-term, continuing projects that match classroom work.
