Behaviour - My Child Does Not Follow Directions

TutorGiant.com

Students who do not follow verbal directions at school often do the same at home.

These students usually miss important and relevant information that they need in order to properly complete a task, do a project, or write a test.  Often, students with ADD/ADHD and/or learning disabilities encounter difficulty with verbal directions both at school and at home.  As a parent, you can help improve your child’s ability to follow directions whether or not he/she has ADD, a learning disability, or just seems ‘out of it’ at times.

*      Reward your child for following directions (e.g. “You did a great job cleaning up your room,”, “I like the way you followed directions”) with any kind of reward that your child will take to.

*      Demonstrate appropriate ways to listen and follow directions (e.g. give your child directions on how to get ready for school and you go through the motions with him/her).

*      Reduce distractions when you want your child to listen (i.e. before bed or at homework time, turn off the TV, phone, and computer…

*      Check to see if your child heard the directions clearly by asking him/her to repeat them to you.

*      Have your child’s hearing checked by a professional.

These suggestions will help your child deal with directions (especially verbal directions) effectively.
