Reading Comprehenison - How to Improve Reading Skills with Fiction Novels By Stuart Ackerman MSc.Ed.,B.A.
Success in integrating literature into public school reading classrooms has been achieved by the study of different genres of literature (e.g., folktales, drama, poetry, classic novels). Through a variety of activities, students can be engaged in comparisons, contrasts, and other higher-level thinking skills. Response journals in which students react to their reading by writing, provide another avenue to promote reflection about the literature being read. Such journals have the potential to actively involve students in linking their ideas to those posed by the author, teacher, or other students. Furthermore, by integrating fiction novels, students will gain a richer vocabulary and develop an appreciation for well-written literature. Most research on narrative text (fiction) has focused on teaching students to use story structure for understanding important characteristics of the stories they read. Even preschool children use story structure to help with their comprehension. As they get older, children improve in their ability to use it. However, some students are slower to develop this ability. They may not be good at specific reading skills, such as picking out important story information, making inferences, and identifying story themes. The most current reading strategies in our school systems today are proving to be effective. Students are learning such reading strategies such as inferring, questioning, and comparing and contrasting when reading fiction. These strategies, in combination with language and content-rich fiction books, will help students improve their reading comprehension skills. ŠTutorgiant.com
