Help My Child Print Neatly (Part 2)

TutorGiant.com

When we think of a student who has difficulty writing neatly the first thing that enters our minds is eye hand coordination.  We assume that he/she has a psychomotor problem.

While this may sometimes be the case, there are some other factors which explain why a child does not print neatly.

One such explanation is ‘spacing’.  Spacing refers to the spaces (obviously) between both words and sentences.

Before trying the following tips, have your child’s vision checked by a professional.

1.    Make sure your child is sitting upright and with the paper slightly tilted (try writing on a straight piece of paper, it’s very awkward!).

2.    When printing, have your child place little dots between letters and a small finger space between words.  This will show your child the correct spacing between both words and letters.

3.    Try to show your child examples of handwritten work for your child to use as reference when printing.

4.    Teach your child to always look at the next word to determine if there is enough space before the margin.

5.    If your child’s writing is really messy, get some graph paper (squared paper) and show him/her to write letters in each block.  You can also show your child to skip blocks between words.

Have your child practice these skills on a regular basis.  It will be just a matter of time until your child is printing neatly.
