Social Skills - How Can I Improve My Child’s Social Skills? TutorGiant.com Parents are the most influential people in a young child’s life. Children consciously and unconsciously pick up on mannerisms and behaviors. There has been much literature lately, stating the importance of Emotional Intelligence, EQ, (which is pretty much social skills) over IQ. In the education system, students are bombarded with group projects, peer editing, peer conferencing, small group presentations, and large group gym activities. They must come to school prepared with the appropriate social skills. There are many techniques you can use to enhance and improve your child’s social skills. In order to do so, you must be able to spend quality time with your child and be cognizant of your own behavior. The following are some basic social skills building tools you can use anytime. They are powerful and should be planned in advance. · Teach your child problem solving techniques. Point out the problem your child was in, and then discuss practical solutions. Have your child vocalize how he/she will handle the problem in the future should the problem arise again. · Provide your child with numerous opportunities to interact with other children. For example, have friends over; go to events, movies, the park… Be physically present with your child when he/she is with others so that you help your child develop his/her social skills. · Do role playing with your child. Have your child ‘practice’ appropriate socialization with you so that he/she will be better prepared for a real situation. · Encourage empathetic behaviors (i.e. taking turns, sharing, listening to others…) · Be a good role model. It’s the old “Do as I do” and not “Do as I say”. Be consistent and supportive with your child. Social skills don’t develop overnight. Patience and a nurturing approach will yield the best results. ©Tutorgiant.com |
