Writing - How Do I Write a Report? TutorGiant.com Reports are factual and they show information in an organized way. The purpose of report writing is to organize and record factual information. Students can write reports about any general topic in science, social studies, or history. Reports can be written across the curriculum. For example, students can write a report on a habitat or the respiratory system for science. Or, they can write a report on ancient Egyptian religion or the origins of democracy for social studies. What’s important to remember though, is that all reports should follow the same format. You can incorporate the following format in order to help your child write an effective report. Each section should have its own paragraph. 1. A Geneneralized Opening Statement or Definition A report introduces a topic with a generalized opening statement. For example, “There are several species of whales”. Or, a report can begin with a definition, “Whales are mammals”. 2. Description The description comes after the opening statement. Here, your child should write about the features, characteristics, or behaviors of the topic. For example, if the report is about sharks, your child should write about a shark’s size, eating habits, speed, location, etc… 3. Summary Comment In this last sentence(s), your child should write a concluding statement in ‘his/her own words’. For example, if your child wrote a report on sharks, he/she could write the following for the summary statement: “Sharks are nature’s perfect predators. They are efficient eating machines”. Have your child focus on detail, detail, and more detail. The essence of a report is to provide factual (detailed) information in a succinct manner. Have your child follow this format, add plenty of detail, and thoroughly edit his/her writing. Tutorgiant.com provides complete Report Writing lessons with worksheets.
