English Grammar  - Adverbs

TutorGiant.com

Adding description to words is an important component of writing.

Any word that describes a single verb, single verbs, or a verb phrase is an ‘adverb’..

Adverbs tell you ‘when’, ‘where’, ‘how’, and ‘in what manner’ an action is performed.  Most adverbs end in ‘ly’.  You can watch the adverb lessons in Tutorgiant.com to gain a better understanding.

1. General Adverbs

For example:

The cheetah ran fast.”

How did the cheetah run?  It ran ‘fast’.  So ‘fast’ is the adverb.

Here are some more examples of adverbs.

She arrived early.”  (when)

The boy played quietly and energetically.” (quietly=how) (energetically=what manner)

2.  Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

Comparative:

If we want to compare two or more people, places, or things, we add the word ‘more’ in front of the adverb.

Example:  “The blue pen writes more smoothly than the black one.”

Superlative:

If we want to show ‘the most of all’, we add the word ‘most’ in front of the adverb.

Example:  “This pen writes the most smoothly of all.”

3.  ‘Time’ Adverbs

Time adverbs tell us ‘when’ the action takes place.

“I would like to have dinner now please.”

“I practice piano daily.”

4.  ‘Place’ Adverbs

Place adverbs tell us ‘where’ the action takes place.

“Put the plates over there.”

“I’d like to go somewhere for the day.”

5.  Adverb Phrases

A phrase is a group of words which has to stay together to make sense.  Adverb phrases describe verbs or verb phrases.

The plate on the table fell to the floor.”

Fell where?  It fell (fell is the verb or action word) to the floor.  So, ‘to the floor’ is the adverb phrase because it describes ‘where’ the plate fell.

I was late when I arrived at school.”

Arrived where?  I arrived (arrive is an action word) at school.  So, ‘at school’ is the adverb phrase because it describes ‘where’ I arrived.

6.  Manner Adverbs

Manner adverbs tell us ‘in what manner’ the action takes place.

“The cat moved gracefully.”

Moved how?  The cat moved (moved is the verb or action word) gracefully. So, ‘gracefully’ describes the manner of the movement.

Now you have a better understanding of adverbs.  First, try to get your child to practice using adjectives in worksheets.  Then, your child will improve his or her English grammar and hence, writing skills.
